Vyrra’s Nest
Overview
Vyrra’s Nest is the network of tunnels and chambers occupied by the Scorchtail kobold clan. It is built around a deeper natural cavern claimed by Vyrra, the black dragon who serves as the clan’s patron and protector. The settlement lies about half a day from Breachill on foot.
The name also refers to the campaign focused on the settlement and its relationships with Breachill and Kyrecliff Roost.
Layout
The Nest combines older natural caves with passages excavated by generations of Scorchtails. Its principal areas include:
- Vyrra’s Cavern: The deepest and most closely guarded chamber, claimed as Vyrra’s lair.
- Central Shrine: A communal space where kobolds honor Vyrra and witness oaths made in her name.
- Workshops: Ventilated chambers used for crafting, repair work, and alchemical experiments.
- Stores and Trading Hall: Secure rooms for food, raw materials, caravan goods, and negotiations with approved visitors.
- Living Warrens: Family chambers linked by narrow passages designed for kobold movement and defense.
Government and Vyrra
Vyrra provides protection and serves as the clan’s unifying patron. The Scorchtails promise loyalty to her, but clan leaders govern ordinary disputes, work assignments, trade, and relations with outsiders.
The kobolds do not hold a single view of the arrangement. Some worship Vyrra, some honor her as a guardian, and others accept the alliance because it keeps the clan secure. Critics in Kyrecliff call these obligations servitude, a description the Scorchtails reject as an outsider’s judgment.
Trade and Travel
A caravan trail links the Nest to Breachill and continues into the river valley toward Kyrecliff Roost, about another day away. Pib and Zarf represent the clan in Breachill and help arrange the movement of food, tools, alchemical supplies, and crafted goods.
The trail passes through disputed hunting grounds near the river crossings. Tengu raids and retaliation by Scorchtail patrols sometimes interrupt trade, even while merchants and artisans from both communities continue to benefit from it.
Reputation
The Scorchtails’ skill in tunneling, crafting, and alchemy earned them greater recognition during Breachill’s recovery from the events of Age of Ashes. Breachill increasingly treats the Nest as a neighboring settlement and trading partner. Kyrecliff acknowledges the clan’s ingenuity but remains hostile to Vyrra’s influence and contests Scorchtail control of the valley route.
