Vyrra’s Nest

Bird's-eye view of Vyrra’s Nest beside the swamp

Overview

Vyrra’s Nest is a young, above-ground hamlet being established by the Scorchtail kobold clan beside a swamp. The settlement lies about half a day from Breachill on foot. New homes and communal buildings are appearing as the kobolds turn a loose camp into a permanent community.

The name also refers to the campaign focused on the settlement and its relationships with Breachill and Kyrecliff Roost.

The Growing Hamlet

The Nest occupies firm ground along the swamp’s edge. Its buildings are above ground and connected by packed paths and raised wooden walks where the soil becomes wet. The settlement is still developing, so construction, repairs, and decisions about its future layout are part of everyday life.

Its principal areas include:

  • Central Shrine: A communal structure where kobolds honor Vyrra and witness oaths made in her name.
  • Common Green: An open gathering place used for clan meetings, shared meals, visiting traders, and public work.
  • Homes: Small above-ground dwellings built in clusters as families establish permanent places in the hamlet.
  • Workshops: Sheds and work yards used for crafting, repairs, and alchemical experiments.
  • Stores and Trading Yard: Raised, weather-protected buildings for food, raw materials, caravan goods, and negotiations with visitors.
  • Swamp Walks: Boardwalks and marked paths that give the Scorchtails access to the swamp while avoiding the deepest water and softest ground.

Government and Vyrra

Vyrra provides protection and serves as the clan’s unifying patron. The Scorchtails promise loyalty to her, but clan leaders govern ordinary disputes, work assignments, construction, trade, and relations with outsiders.

The kobolds do not hold a single view of the arrangement. Some worship Vyrra, some honor her as a guardian, and others accept the alliance because it keeps the clan secure. Critics in Kyrecliff call these obligations servitude, a description the Scorchtails reject as an outsider’s judgment.

The Swamp

The neighboring swamp shapes the hamlet’s economy, defenses, and daily routines. The Scorchtails use its plants, water, and other resources while learning where it is safe to build and travel. Flooding, insects, dangerous wildlife, and unfamiliar terrain make the settlement’s growth difficult, but the wetland also forms a natural barrier around one side of the hamlet.

Trade and Travel

A caravan trail approaches the hamlet from the drier ground leading toward Breachill and continues into the river valley toward Kyrecliff Roost, about another day away. Pib and Zarf represent the clan in Breachill and help arrange the movement of food, tools, building materials, alchemical supplies, and crafted goods.

The trail passes through disputed hunting grounds near the river crossings. Tengu raids and retaliation by Scorchtail patrols sometimes interrupt trade, even while merchants and artisans from both communities continue to benefit from it.

Reputation

The Scorchtails’ skill in construction, crafting, and alchemy earned them greater recognition during Breachill’s recovery from the events of Age of Ashes. Breachill increasingly treats the growing hamlet as a neighboring settlement and trading partner. Kyrecliff acknowledges the clan’s ingenuity but remains hostile to Vyrra’s influence and contests Scorchtail control of the valley route.
