The Abandonment of Itharil
The Final Abandonment of Itharil
After Borlan Thornfall II became a Nazgûl, Lethrain entered a long decline. Families left Itharil as the Ring’s shadow lingered over the royal halls. Orc raids and unnatural apparitions drove more people from the surrounding lands, and the former capital slowly became a collection of isolated neighborhoods among spreading ruins.
Over the centuries, Itharil’s buildings crumbled and wilderness overtook its walls. A small population endured through most of the Third Age, supported by descendants of the Lethrain Rangers. Few outsiders visited, and even fewer knew the city’s history.
During the War of the Ring at the end of the Third Age, increasing Orc activity from the Misty Mountains finally forced the remaining inhabitants to flee. Itharil was fully abandoned in T.A. 3019. Its empty streets, overgrown towers, and haunted royal quarter became dangerous ruins known only to rangers and students of forgotten history.
The flight of Itharil’s last inhabitants ended Lethrain as a living community, but not as a lineage. Its memory and the surviving branch of its ruling house continue through Darethor Thornfall.
