The Ring of Power

The Corruption of Borlan Thornfall II

Generations after the death of Borlan I, his descendant Borlan Thornfall II ruled Lethrain. Sometime after S.A. 1700, an emissary of Sauron offered him one of the Nine Rings of Power. Borlan II accepted it in the hope of strengthening his secluded kingdom and extending his life.

At first, the Ring appeared to grant Borlan greater strength, authority, and foresight. Lethrain prospered under his renewed vigor, but the Ring gradually fed his ambition and fear. He became obsessed with control, mistrusted his allies and family, and ruled through increasingly harsh decrees. Shadows gathered in Itharil while its people sensed that something unnatural had entered the royal house.

As the years passed without visibly touching him, Borlan withdrew from public life. He slowly faded from the Seen World until the Ring consumed his will. By the time the Nazgûl first appeared around S.A. 2251, Borlan Thornfall II had become one of Sauron’s Nine servants.

Borlan II was Lethrain’s last crowned king. Members of his family and the kingdom’s rangers preserved scattered communities, but no successor could reunite the realm. The empty throne, lingering influence of the Ring, and recurring Orc attacks began Lethrain’s long decline. One branch of Borlan’s family survived, eventually producing Darethor Thornfall.
