The History of Felswald

Hidden in a quiet valley on Bretonnia’s western border, the town of Felswald is a symbol of strength and survival. Its history is full of courage, loyalty, and battles against Chaos, all under the leadership of the Duke of Argenvale, whose family has ruled the area for many generations.
Founding of Felswald
Felswald was founded in 1870 IC during the reign of King Louen Leoncoeur. It started as a small village of farmers and craftsmen who were granted land and protection by Duke Edouard, the ruler of the region, and Lord Tristan, the local ruler of Felswald. In return, the settlers pledged their loyalty to both their Duke and their Lord. The name "Felswald" means "Rocky Forest," inspired by the sharp cliffs and dense woods surrounding the valley.
Life in early Felswald was tough. Beastmen roamed the forests, raiding farms, and greenskins often attacked the area. To protect the town, Lord Triston built a stone keep and strong walls. These defenses not only kept Felswald safe but also became a symbol of its strength. Knights loyal to the Duke patrolled the region, ensuring peace and justice.
The Knights of Felswald
The Knights of Felswald have always been a vital part of the town’s history and defense. These noble warriors uphold Bretonnia’s chivalric code, dedicating their lives to protecting the weak, serving the Lady of the Lake, and defending their liege, the Duke of Argenvale. The knights of Felswald are renowned for their bravery and loyalty, often riding into battle to repel threats from Beastmen, greenskins, and Chaos forces.
Each generation, squires from Felswald and surrounding villages are trained in the ways of knighthood, learning swordsmanship, horseback combat, and the tenets of Bretonnian honor. Many of these knights join the Duke’s retinue, serving as the first line of defense against the many dangers that threaten the valley.
The knights are an integral part of Felswald’s culture and identity, participating in festivals, ceremonies, and other important events. They are respected not only for their martial prowess but also for their role as symbols of hope and unity.
The Order of the Silver Chalice, a knightly order based in Felswald, is particularly famous. These knights are sworn to the service of the Lady of the Lake and the protection of sacred sites, including the Chapel of the Lady. They are easily recognized by their green and midnight blue banners, adorned with a two-headed raven looking in opposite directions, symbolizing vigilance and wisdom.
The Alchemist’s Guild
In the 22nd century IC, everything changed when miners found a rare mineral called Aetherium in the cliffs near Felswald. This magical mineral attracted alchemists and scholars from across Bretonnia. Duke Guillaume, who supported learning and innovation, allowed these scholars to create the Alchemist’s Guild.
The guild’s experiments brought wealth and recognition to Felswald. However, their work also drew the attention of dark forces. Followers of Tzeentch, the Chaos God of Change and Magic, infiltrated the guild, using its experiments for their own evil plans. Over time, their influence caused fear and mistrust within the town.
The Plague of 2301 IC
During the Great War Against Chaos, Felswald suffered from a deadly plague. The disease, created by Nurgle, the Chaos God of Decay, killed both commoners and nobles, and many thought the town would not survive.
In this dark time, Father Edvard Graustein, a priest of the Lady of the Lake, inspired hope. His prayers and leadership helped the people fight back against despair. He performed rituals and led efforts to cleanse the town. After the plague ended, the people built a chapel dedicated to the Lady to honor Father Graustein’s courage. This chapel became an important place of worship.
Conflict Between Tzeentch and Nurgle
After the plague, Felswald became a battleground for Chaos. Tzeentch’s followers, hidden within the Alchemist’s Guild, fought for power against Nurgle’s agents. Their rivalry peaked in 2428 IC during the Battle of the Shrouded Glade. Tzeentch’s sorcerers unleashed a powerful magical storm to destroy a Nurgle warband near Felswald.
While the warband was defeated, the storm left a scar on the land. The surrounding forest became a cursed area known as the Shrouded Glade. Even today, strange and dangerous events happen there, and locals avoid it out of fear.
Felswald Today
Felswald is a town of contrasts. Its people are loyal to Duke Reynard, the ruler of the land, while Lord Cedric of Felswald oversees the town directly from the keep overlooking the valley. Bretonnian knights patrol the area, protecting the town and following the strict code of chivalry. However, whispers of Chaos remain. The Alchemist’s Guild still operates, but rumors of dark experiments and secret loyalties persist.
The town’s economy thrives due to its trade routes and unique alchemical products. Even so, the people are cautious of strangers, remembering the dangers that often follow prosperity. Felswald’s survival depends on strong leadership and the faith of its people.

The people of Felswald are hardworking and deeply devoted to their traditions. Most are farmers, merchants, or craftsmen, but a small group of knights and scholars add to the town’s prestige. Past battles and hardships have left their mark on the community, making them cautious but strong.
The Lady of the Lake is central to their faith, uniting them in hope and purpose. However, some whisper about secret cults and hidden plots, adding tension to their daily lives.
